Australia Bangladesh Press & Media Council is an organization of Bangladeshi media outlets in Australia. It is a not-for-profit, voluntary, independent organization consists of representatives of Bangladeshi print, TV and online media and representatives of Bangladeshi community in Australia. The association was created to keep in touch with all theneditors, journalists, columnists, writers, poets of Bangladeshi origin working in Australia. The council is consists of 13 individuals representing members of the print and online media who run the organization for two years. The is one president, three vice presidents, one secretary general, one joint secretary, one treasurer, one public relations secretary, one cultural secretary and four members.

Aims of Australia Bangladesh Press & Media Council

  • Reaffirming that the Bill of Rights, which includes freedom of expression and Mediation, which in turn includes freedom of the Press and Media, is a cornerstone of democracy
  • Acknowledging that the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and mediation and that ABPMC is also party, drawn up by the Australian ABPMC regulation is the best system for promoting hig standards in the media”
  • Believing that the effectiveness of self-regulation by the print media is enhanced by public participation in a co-regulatory process;
  • Noting that the laws of the country allow for alternative dispute resolution through a speedy and cost-effective process; and
  • Accepting that co-regulation involving exclusively the Press and Media and the public will uphold freedom of expression and mediation and the editorial independence of the Press and Media, and contribute to high standards of journalism and ethical conduct.

Objectives of Australia Bangladesh Press & Media Council

  • To promote and to develop ethical practice in journalism and to promote the adoption of and adherence to those standards by the Australian print and online media;
  • To adopt the Code of Ethics and Conduct for AUSTRALIA Print and Online Media as a guide to excellent practice, and to act as its custodian;
  • To establish and maintain a voluntary independent mechanism to deal with complaints about journalistic ethics and conduct from the public against member publications, that subscribe to the Code of Ethics and Conduct for AUSTRALIA Print and Online Media;
  • To promote and preserve the right of freedom of expression and mediation, including freedom of the Press and Media as guaranteed in Section 16 of the Constitution of the Republic of Australia;
  • To promote the concept of independent media co-regulation involving exclusively representatives of print and online media and representatives of the public, as well as public awareness of the existence of the ABPMC’s mediation and adjudication services to deal with complaints about journalistic practice;
  • To cooperate with other media Councils and similar organisations in Australia and abroad that have the aims and objectives as the ABPMC; and
  • To undertake such other tasks as are necessary to further the objectives of the Council.
