The Bangladeshi General Practitioners Association of Australia (BGPAA) is a professional organization of Bangladeshi-origin medical doctors based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was founded in 2020 as a non-profit organization to offer academic, training, and clinical support to Bangladeshi practicing physicians in various parts of Australia. The organisation is run by practicing GPs who volunteer their time.
Vision
Improve patient care by:
- Provide peer support to fellow general practitioners.
- Provide general practitioners with education and training.
- Maintain high standards of general practice.
- Help promote primary healthcare and family practice in Bangladesh.
- Promote the programs of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).
Programs & Activities
The Bangladeshi General Practitioners Association of Australia (BGPAA) has a dual focus, operating in both Australia and Bangladesh.
In Australia, BGPAA aims to:
- Support GPs and GP Registrars: Offer educational, mental, and mentoring support.
- Assist Exam Preparation: Help trainees and examinees prepare for RACGP and ACRRM examinations.
- Aid IMG Assimilation: Create opportunities for Bangladeshi International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to integrate into the local health system, and discourage brain drain.
- Promote GP Owner Network: Develop a network to improve service quality and financial viability for general practice owners.
- Utilize Member Expertise: Support BGPAA’s activities utilizing its members’ skills and expertise.
- Foster Local Engagement: Encourage members to participate and be actively involved in state/territory-based Bangladeshi medical societies.
In Bangladesh, BGPAA aims to:
- Provide Educational Support: Offer educational support to primary care doctors, both in-person and remotely.
- Develop Service Platforms: Create platforms for education and telemedicine.
- Collaborate with BCGP: Establish a relationship with the Bangladesh College of General Practitioners (BCGP) to improve primary healthcare or general practice.
Membership:
Bangladeshi General Practitioners Association of Australia (BGPAA) offers its membership in three categories:
- General member: Any Bangladeshi general practitioner residing permanently or intending to reside in Australia who pays the annual membership fee. Members gain full constitutional rights after two consecutive years of subscription.
- Temporary member: Any Bangladeshi general practitioner or doctor in Australia can become a temporary member for a one-year term, paying a one-time subscription fee. They enjoy all general member benefits except election and voting rights.
- Associate member: Any Bangladeshi doctor or medical student planning to become a general practitioner is eligible for associate membership.
