Alliance of South Asian American Labor

The Alliance of South Asian American Labor (ASAAL), founded in 2008, advocates for South Asian workers within the trade union movement in the United States. Its focus encompasses workers from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. ASAAL strives to create a more diverse and inclusive labor movement that better addresses the needs and aspirations of minority and low-income workers within the South Asian American community.

Membership in ASAAL is open to various categories. This includes current labor union members, retired union members in good standing, individuals who support the labor movement, and anyone who simply wishes to show general labor support. Members in good standing enjoy additional privileges such as participation in business meetings, eligibility for elected or appointed positions, and the ability to contribute to discussions, propose resolutions, and vote on motions and amendments. ASAAL offers various membership tiers including Regular/Associate, Retiree/Student, and Family Memberships.

The Alliance of South Asian American Labor (ASAAL) aims to achieve the following goals:

• Economic Empowerment: Improve economic prospects and job opportunities for South Asian American workers.
• Representation: Advocate for increased participation of South Asian Americans and minorities within the labor movement and political sphere.
• Workplace Fairness: Ensure respectful and professional treatment for all South Asian American workers in their workplaces.
• Civic Engagement: Promote voter registration, education, and participation among South Asian Americans.
• Political Advocacy: Provide a political voice for South Asian American workers on local and national issues.
• Immigration Reform: Advocate for comprehensive immigration reform, including legal immigration pathways and effective border control.
• Open Forum: Facilitate discussions among South Asian American workers to address challenges and develop solutions relevant to their diverse workforce.
• Equal Opportunity: Promote equal employment opportunities for qualified South Asian American workers.
• Community Collaboration: Actively support civil rights and civic groups working to improve living and working conditions.
• Labor Solidarity: Build stronger alliances between labor unions and the general public.
• Unionization: Organize workers who are not currently represented by a union.
