Synopsis of Konjoos (কঞ্জুস) – Bangla Drama
Konjoos’ is a Bangla adaptation of famous. French playwright Moliere’s classic comedy “L’Avare” (The Miser). Popular theatre personality, Tarik Anam Khan adapted it in Bangla in the 80’s for Loko Natyadal and since then it has been a very popular drama in Bangladesh. Liaquat Ali Lucky has been directing the play since its premiere in 1988. The adapted play Konjoos has a history of being staged more than 600 times. Although The Miser is usually considered to be a comedy, its tone is one of absurdity and oddness rather than of entertaining. The play, based on the Aulularia (The Pot of Gold) of Roman comic playwright Plautus, recasts the ancient comic figure of the miser who is inhuman in his worship of money and all too human in his need for respect and affection.

The plot revolves around the classic conflict of love and money. The set in the mid 70’s in old Dhaka, the play is a blend of satire and humor, exploring the depth of human greed, lust and manipulation. Konjoos follows the tribulations of Haider Ali Khan, a stingy old man obsessed with the accumulation of his wealth. Seeking to marry both his children off for money, Haider Ali himself is determined to marry the young and attractive Morjina – whose heart belongs to Ali’s son Kaiser. Steeped in family politics, greed, misunderstanding and laced with Moliere’s comedic magic, Konjoos is considered a favorite play of all time.
