Founded in 2019, the South Jamaica Bangladeshi Community (SJBC) is a non-profit, non-political, and non-religious organization dedicated to supporting and uplifting the Bangladeshi community in South Jamaica, Queens, New York. Membership is open to Bangladeshi individuals residing in South Jamaica, between Van Wyck and Merrick and South Conduit and Liberty.

Vision & Mission
  • Vision: To contribute positively to the community and organization through the accumulated experience, knowledge, and commitment of its members.
  • Mission: To provide humanitarian aid to Bangladeshi people in South Jamaica and advance Bangladeshi heritage, culture, and interests in the area.
Goals & Activities
  •  Provide a central meeting point for Bangladeshi individuals residing in South Jamaica, Queens, NY.
  • Serve as a platform for discussion, networking, and community-building activities.
  • Connect all Bangladeshi individuals within the South Jamaica community.
  • Facilitate communication, foster relationships, and ensure no individual or group feels isolated.
  • Represent and advocate for the Bangladeshi community and culture within South Jamaica.
  • Act as a voice and advocate for the Bangladeshi people and their cultural heritage.
  • Promote cultural events, educate the broader community about Bangladeshi traditions, and address issues affecting the Bangladeshi community.
  • Improve the well-being of its members and families through social services, educational assistance, health initiatives, and other programs.
Childten Program
  • After-school programs: Likely to provide educational support, safe spaces, and potentially cultural activities after regular school hours.
  • Summer camps: Offering recreational, educational, and perhaps cultural experiences during school breaks.
  • Mentoring programs: Connecting children with positive role models for guidance and support.
Membership

Membership is open to people of Bangladeshi origin living in a defined South Jamaica territory (Van Wyck Expressway to Merrick Boulevard, and South Conduit Avenue to Liberty Avenue) who agree to abide by the organization’s rules. Applications are submitted on a prescribed form and reviewed for completeness. Upon validation, the applicant is enlisted as a General Member. An acceptance letter is emailed.

Four types of Membership are available:

  • General Members: Individuals living in the South Jamaica area who are enlisted and follow the rules. The annual fee is $20.00, due by March 31st.
  • Associate Members: Family members of General Members. No membership fee is required, but information updates must be submitted.
  • Honorary Members: Nominated by the Executive Committee, these individuals previously lived in South Jamaica or have distinguished themselves professionally and wish to support the SJBC’s mission. There is no annual fee, but donations are appreciated. They have a two-year tenure, renewable, and are expected to attend specific executive/advisory committee meetings.
  • Lifetime Members: General, Associate, or Honorary members who pay a one-time fee of $1,000. No tenure; eligible for all General, Associate, and Honorary member benefits.
