Western Region Bangla School (WRBS) is an ethnic Bangladeshi language school in Melbourne, Australia, catering to the educational needs of the second-generation Australian Bangladeshi community residing in the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne. It is open to all Australian Bangladeshi individuals living in Victoria. Established in 2006 in Hoppers Crossing, Victoria, WRBS aims to promote Bangla literacy and numeracy and pass on the rich Bangladeshi cultural heritage to Bangladeshi-origin students. Since its inception, the school has made significant strides, currently enrolling 152 students.
Children in WRBS, along with learning Bangla, also acquire Reading and Writing Skills, including learning to read and write in Bangla. They develop Social Skills such as Friendship, teamwork, confidence, and leadership. Additionally, they enhance Communication Skills by learning to speak and listen effectively. Cultural Awareness is fostered by understanding Bengali and other cultures. Critical Thinking and Creativity are cultivated through problem-solving and generating new ideas. Cultural Education encompasses Art and creative expression.
School admission is open for children from Grade Prep to 12th grade, aged 5 to 16 years.
To broaden education, make it enjoyable, effective, and meet the growing needs of the rapidly expanding Bangladeshi community in Victoria, WRBS has introduced Islamic Class, Bangla Mobile Library, and Bangladeshi Sports Club. These clubs offer opportunities for Bangladeshi students, teachers, parents, and guardians to participate and engage in activities that cater to their interests and cultural heritage.
Run as an after-school project, the school is one of the signature projects of the Victorian Bangladeshi Community Foundation (VBCF). The Victorian Government accredits the school and provides funding for it.
WRBS is a Child Safe compliance school that aims to create and maintain safe environments for students. Its primary objective is to prevent child abuse and respond appropriately to any incidents of harm that may occur.
