Founded in 2012, the Canada Bangladesh Education Trust (CBET) is a registered charity organization with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) that aims to support financially challenged students in Bangladesh and Canada with strong academic records, helping to improve their socio-economic status. CBET strives to give scholarships to college students in all sub-districts in Bangladesh and colleges in Canada. CBET aims to make a difference in the lives of those who are not fortunate enough to continue their education due to financial struggle. By providing financial aid, the organization aims to help them establish themselves in society and enable them to contribute to the country with the skills and knowledge they have acquired. CBET’s vision is to make education easily accessible to orphans and the needy in Bangladesh and Canada, fostering contributing citizens, alleviating poverty, and strengthening communities.
Mission
Canada Bangladesh Education Trust (CBET) provides scholarships irrespective of culture, religion, or gender, and the mission is to
- award 300+ College scholarships in Bangladesh of $250 each
- award 300+ University scholarships in Bangladesh of $600 each
- award 10+ University scholarships in Canada of $1,000 each
- award 15+ High School Graduates scholarships in Canada of $500 each
Objectives
- To advance education by providing publicly available scholarships, bursaries, and other forms of financial assistance to students in Canada and Bangladesh for post-secondary education. Additionally, to advance education by providing educational tools such as computers to public educational institutions in Bangladesh.
Operation
Students can apply for the University and College Scholarship directly online.
University Scholarship Eligibility
Target Group: First-year students at any public university.
Academic Requirement: Minimum A grade in HSC or equivalent exam.
Income Ceiling: Maximum annual family income of Taka Three Lakhs.
Priority: Orphan students and past CBET College Scholarship recipients.
College Scholarship Eligibility
Target Group: First-year students.
Academic Requirement: Minimum Grade A in SSC or equivalent exam.
Income Ceiling: Maximum annual family income of Taka Three Lakhs (exceptions for orphans).
Reservation: One scholarship reserved for an orphan.
CBET Canada University and High School Scholarships
University Scholarships
Scholarship providers: Algonquin College, Carleton University, and the University of Ottawa.
Award: Each institution offers two scholarships annually, valued at $1,000 or $750.
High School Scholarships
Eligibility: Deserving Ottawa High School graduates.
Award: One $500 scholarship per academic year.
Selection Criteria (by High School Management): Financial need, Community volunteering
Academic standing: Minimum B grade
Funding
CBET collects donations and funding through annual fundraising dinners, Ramadan iftar dinners, Picnics, Phita festivals, Friday Jumma prayer collection, Taraweeh events at different mosques, Zakat fund, charity organizations in Canada (United Way, Human Concern International (HCI), Islamic Relief Canada, International Development and Relief Foundation (IDRF), etc. Donations to CBET are tax-deductible.
Achievements:
Canada Bangladesh Education Trust (CBET) has awarded scholarships in the past. For example:
- In 2025, 312 students from 52 institutions received College scholarships.
- In 2024, 85 students from 32 institutions received University Scholarships.
- In 2024, 265 students from 52 institutions received College Scholarships.
- In 2023, 85 students from 27 institutions received University Scholarships.
- In 2023, 356 students from 69 institutions received College Scholarships.
- In 2022, 85 students from 23 institutions received University Scholarships.
- In 2021, 66 students from 25 institutions received University Scholarships.
Previously, with the received donation, Canada Bangladesh Education Trust awarded 80 scholarships, each valued at $150, totaling $12,000 for the 2013-2014 period. In 2014, the CBET High School Appreciation Award was presented to ten high school graduates from various high schools in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, at a total cost of $1,500. CBET is dedicated to helping individuals break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their families.
Membership
To be a voting member, a person must have spent at least two hours per month volunteering (or 25 hours in the current or preceding year) and donated at least $20 per month (or $240 in the current or preceding year).
Team
The Canada Bangladesh Education Trust is managed by a board of directors comprising 6 to 11 members. Each director can serve for a maximum of two terms, each term lasting six years. It is recommended to appoint two new members and two existing members to retire every year. The directors consist of a balanced representation of different regions of Bangladeshi origin communities, including men, women, and youths.
