SUMMARY:The Spectral Wound: Sexual Violence\, Public Memories and the Bangladesh War of 1971
DESCRIPTION:“The Spectral Wound: Sexual Violence\, Public Memories and the Bangladesh War of 1971” – A book launch and discussion with author of the book\, Nayanika Mookherjee. \nFollowing the 1971 Bangladesh War\, the Bangladesh government publicly designated the thousands of women raped by the Pakistani military and their local collaborators as birangonas\, (“brave women”). Nayanika Mookherjee demonstrates that while this celebration of birangonas as heroes keeps them in the public memory\, they exist in the public consciousness as what Mookherjee calls a spectral wound. In critically examining the pervasiveness of the birangona construction\, Mookherjee opens the possibility for a more politico-economic\, ethical\, and nuanced inquiry into the sexuality of war. (Duke University Press website) \nThe event is hosted by South Asia NYU \nVenue: \nInstitute for Public Knowledge\, Room 222\n20 Cooper Square\, New York\, NY 10003\n\n

SUMMARY:Blockade - A documentary by Arif Yousuf
DESCRIPTION:Blockade – A documentary by Arif Yousuf\n85 Minutes\, 2015 \nThe Blockade documentary is a story of how Quaker and Jewish activists along with Bangladeshi expats shed light on the Nixon administration’s covert support of the genocide in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) in 1971. Equipped with just canoes and paddles\, the young activists risked everything to stop the shipment of arms and save lives half the way across the world. These activists had worked closely with MLK and have used non-violent resistance in the decades since to bring about change….. And they are still going strong. \nThe film is based on the book BLOCKADE: A Guide to Nonviolent Intervention by Richard K. Taylor \nBuy Ticket: $10\nVenue: \nEngelman Recital Hall\, Baruch College\n55 Lexington Ave\, New York\, NY 10010\n\nContact:\n \nGolam Sarowar Harun\, 718-414-9743\nArif Yusuf\, 212-787-6514\nsyed.yousuf@gmail.com
