Bangladesh Development Initiative (BDI) is a non-profit organization based in the United States. Its members include scholars and professionals committed to supporting development initiatives in Bangladesh aimed at improving the quality of life for all its citizens. BDI engages in and facilitates scholarly exchange between Bangladesh and overseas scholars through educational programs, an academic peer-reviewed journal (Journal of Bangladesh Studies), and a book publication program. BDI also regularly organizes conferences to promote new and relevant research on Bangladesh and provide a forum for debating policy alternatives pertaining to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh Development Initiative works to
- support policy research that will advance the formulation and implementation of national policies to ensure the availability of food, home, health care, clothes, education and transportation to the people of Bangladesh,
- support industrialization and acceleration of rural development of Bangladesh as a means to alleviate poverty,
- foster strong relationships and solidarity across Bangladeshi residents of North America, to raise awareness around the developmental issues facing the country and to address those issues with a unified effort,
- initiate cultural exchange to promote international understanding between the people of Bangladesh and the world community,
- publish books, pamphlets and research dissertations to enhance the above objectives, and
- target the underprivileged classes, women and children in all developmental efforts.
