Sneha is an organization of sisterhood of South Asian women in West Hartford, Connecticut. Founded in 1983 and registered in 1998, Sneha works primarily with Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lankan, Afghani and Nepalese women but it open to all women regardless of ethnicity, nationality, age, race, religion, color, cultural background, sexual orientation, gender identity. The organization supports and provides referrals to women of South Asian origin in Connecticut, especially survivors of domestic violence, and to encourage dialogue about such cultural topics as immigration, inter-generational communication, and financial independence. The organization is a 100% volunteer based 501(C)(3) not-for-profit organization, which runs through by the support and work of its dedicated board members and general members. Other funding comes from annual fundraising event, donation etc.
Service offered:
- Domestic Violence Prevention: physical (beating/slapping/spanking), sexual (unwanted sex), emotional (name calling/constant criticism), economic (limiting access to money/employment) and/or psychological (fear/intimidation/isolation from others), etc.
- Referral Service: connect you to networks that are located closer to your area; referrals to mental health therapists, physicians, and attorneys who are familiar with South Asian culture, etc.
- Support and Counseling: information about job, resources, legal aid, what to do, rights etc.
- Language Support: besides English, the organization offers its support in most of the major South Asian languages, such as, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Bangla, Telgu, Kanada, Gujrati, Marathi, Punjabi etc.
- Empowering Women: book reading, seminar, film, education, conversation, work-life balance, childcare, building relationship, etc.
- Building Bridges: actively participate in the local community to understand and outreach surrounding ethnic cultures, project positive South Asian community image, contribute in building a dynamic USA, etc.
- Inter-generational Communication: bridges the gap between generations by increasing dialog, growing communication, explaining issues to all aspects of life that may affect South Asian community.
